This badge is not an ordinary tiger, but a Royal Tiger of India, this was awarded to the 17th Regiment in 1825 as a lasting testimony to the exemplary conduct of the corps during its service in India from 1804 to 1823.

This Regiment is well known for its high sounding nickname "The Pompadours" which had its origin in the purple facings of the 2nd Battalion, this colour was particuarly favoured by Madame de Pompadour, a mistress of Louis XV.
