Formed in 1881, from the amalgamation of the 27th or Inniskilling Regiment of Foot and the 108th Regiment.

The 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment and the 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment amalgamated in 1881 to form the Royal Irish Rifles, becoming in 1921 the Royal Ulster Rifles on the creation of the Irish Free State.
