In 1758 the grenadiers of the 40th Foot formed part of General Wolfe's famous "Luisberg Grenadiers" which captured Louisberg.

The loyal title came from the family motto of the first Colonel of the 81st Foot, Albermarle Berti, 9th Earl of Lindsey, who formed the Loyal Lincoln Volunteers in 1793.
