Formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the Devonshire Regiment and the Dorset Regiment. The motto of the Regiment is "Semper Fidelis" (Ever True).

The Devons were known as "The Bloody Eleventh" for their exploits at the Battle of Salamanca. The Castle of Exeter is in the centre of the badge.

The motto of the Dorset Regiment "Primus in Indis" (First in India) relates to the 39th Regiment and its proud claim of being the first of His Majesty's regiments to serve in India (1757).
