Formed on 13th May 1912, developed from the Air Battalion of the Royal Engineers which itself was formed in 1911. The RFC was divided into two wings, a naval wing and a military wing. In 1914 the naval wing became part of the Royal Naval Air Service. On 1st April 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and elements of the Royal Naval Air Service merged to form the Royal Air Force.
