ARNHEM 17TH SEPTEMBER 1944
BY SIMON SMITH
Arnhem
The British 1st Airborne Division, consisting of some 10,000 men, landed on and around the town of Arnhem with the objective of capturing the Bridge, until relieved by the British XXX Corps. Most of the airborne troops were dropped some distance from the town, with only the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment actually getting to the objective. Due to a number of problems, including failure in communications, bad weather, and the presence of the German II SS Panzer Corps, the attack faltered after several days bitter fighting. Only 2,163 men actually managed to escape , the rest being killed or captured.
