Celer et Audax (Swift and Bold): the Regimental motto comes from the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and originated as a term of praise for the 2nd and 3rd Royal Americans at the battle of Quebec in 1759.

In 1816 the Regiment was taken out of the numbered regiments of the line (95th Rifles) and restyled the Rifle Brigade, this was for their superb efforts during the Peninsular War and the subsequent Battle of Waterloo. As is common with all rifle regiments marching is at the traditional tempo of 140 paces per minute.
