| Although founded by King George V in 1916 for
award to NCO's and other ranks in the Army for 'Bravery in the Field' the first
awards dated back to the beginning of the 1914-18 War. Provision was made for
the award of bars. Subsequent warrants extended to women and warrant Officers,
as well as to personnel in the other services when operating on the ground.
