The 72nd Highlanders had the nickname 'The Wild Macraes' as they were originally recruited from men of uncertain temperament, from the Macrae clan's moors of Northern Scotland.

The two regiments amalgamated to form the Cameronians in 1881, they adopted the rifle uniform of dark green with black appointments, the trews were of Douglas sett (the tartan of the Regiment's founder, the Earl of Angus).
