[SB383] The Royal Irish Regiment (QVC)(18th)

Raised in 1684 as The Earl of Granards Regiment of Foot, and titled the Regiment of Ireland in 1695.Disbanded in 1922 on the formation of the Irish Free State.

The two founder regiments were awarded the honour of becoming a rifle regiment in 1881 upon amalgamation, forming the Royal Irish Rifles. On 1st January 1921 the title changed to the Royal Ulster Rifles.

Formed on 22nd October 1915, from the Motor Machine Gun Service, a Heavy Branch was formed in July 1916 as a cover name for the new tank arm, later to become the Tank Corps in 1917.
